 Malaysian Raptor Watch 2010

by Gawin Chutima, BCST Chairman

On March 13-14, 2010, for the first time BCST was invited to take part in Raptor Watch, a bird fair type event that has been organized by Malaysia Nature Society (MNS), to raise awareness of Malaysian public on birds and raptor migration in a resort near Port Dickson since 2000. On top of a hilly cape in Tanjung Tuan or Cape Rachado Nature Reserve, which is also an IBA, next to the resort was the spot where MNS volunteers counted raptors flying across the narrowest point of the Strait of Malacca, 38 kilometres, on its migration back to North Asia every year. Counting this year, which began on February 20 until April 4, has set a new record, 73,152 of which 85% were Oriental Honey Buzzard.  Altogether twelve species were sighted.  BCST Chairman, Gawin Chutima, gave a talk to a full house of multinational audience on raptors rehabilitation for release to the wild in Thailand and also took part in a meeting to co-found the annual Asian Bird Fair to take place for the first time in the Philippines this coming September.
